Swallow and rose foot tattoo Luke Wessman Soho NYC

February 17th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Tattoo - (Comments Off)

swallow rose foot tattoo luke wessman

Fun foot tattoo today. Swallows are one of my favorite birds to tattoo, and roses are my favorite flower to tattoo,  either are a classic and look great if done right.

The meaning of a swallow tattoo. The one meaning I have always heard, and chosen to believe, was that they signify for a sailor a doing a certain miles at sea.  A sailor with one swallow had travelled over 5,000 nautical miles, and a sailor with two swallows had travelled 10,000 nautical miles.  Traveling these great distances was extremely difficult and dangerous in the early days of sailing, so one or more swallow tattoos denoted a very experienced and valuable sailor. It is also legend that if the sailor drowns, the swallows will carry their soul to heaven, representing freedom and hope.

Another coined term in the UK for the swallow tattoo on the hands is a symbolism of a prison sentence from an ex-con to the meaning of “done your bird, done your time”.

But you do not need to be a sailor to get one of these great birds tattooed, just wanting a cool tattoo is a good enough reason, and a rose tattoo is one of the best tattoos you can get in my opinion, “always in bloom” timeless classic.

Luke Wessman at the Ami James pop up event at the Empire hotel Fashion Week

February 15th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Celebrities | Events | Friends - (Comments Off)

Ami was doing this small “pop up” event in the Empire hotel across from the Lincoln Center during this months “Fashion Week” or as I like to call it “Fashion Weak” Ami invited me to do a little tattooing with him there.  Im a single man these days and I never get tired of  being surrounded  by super models, who are partaking in fashion weak events such as this one all over New York City, also its nice to get off Wooster street for a change. Thanks Ami #FTM

I did a couple tattoos. The first one was on Joshua David Stein the newly appointed editor and chief for Blackbook.  I found Joshua to be very pleasant, and for the sake of the tattoo, very easy going. He has been tattooed by a few tattooers that I admire, so it was a pleasure to add a small piece to his collection. Its always great to share a canvas with your peers. Thanks Joshua, Pleasure to meet you and good luck with your new job.

The second was on the lovely  Neon Hitch (her real name rivals my older brothers, Eventide for uniqueness) We actually started at the Empire Hotel but do to chaos and time, we hopped a cab down to 43 wooster street “Ny Ink” to finish up in peace.  Although the tattoos I did on her were small they were very meaningful and it was cool spending some time with such a Og Gypsy like Neon.

Nice meeting you Neon, best of luck in the music business, and safe travels about. #green

Hand Made Tattoo Machines by Tim Hendricks

February 13th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Friends | Videos - (Comments Off)

Here is a great video from you tube, of my dear friend Tim Hendricks in his machine shop.  I am proud to have in my collection a few hand made Tim Hendricks tattoo machines. I use a Tim Hendricks machine at least twice a day.

One of the things about a tattoo machine that I value the most is what I call the “mojo” of the machine (the soul that is put into it by the builder).  Every machine has a little bit of its own; “mojo”, where it came from, the style of the frame, the time it was being built, who was in the room, the engraving on the machine, the wraps of the coils, all these little things give a tattoo machine something special.  If your a tattooer and you don’t have a Tim Hendricks tattoo machine, your kinda missing out on some good shit, seen and unseen.   If you know Tim even half as well as I know Tim, you know that he really knows his shit when it comes to a tattoo machine, also he’s one of the best natured people I know.  Get some of that “mojo” you wont be sorry. Tattoo machines made with intelligence, heart and soul.  website>  SaltwaterTattoo.com twitter> @saltwatertattoo

Thank you Tim for making some of the tools I can make a living with. And being a true friend. C/S

A visit from Hanky Panky and wife from Amsterdam

February 11th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Events | Friends - (Comments Off)

One of the things I have always loved about tattooing is the broad reach of  friendships among the artist. And the you never know what the day might hold feeling I wake up with.  Today Hank Schiffmacher “Hanky Panky” and his lovely wife Louise stop in on their way to the Philadelphia tattoo convention. What a pleasant surprise.  I just seen them in Amsterdam a couple months ago for Hanks Grand opening of the “Amsterdam Tattoo Museum” where I was honored to lend a hand during the pre opening prep work , along side friends like Juan Puente, Tommy the truth, Dan Dringenburg, Duggie Mitts, and Filip Lou.  check out the Museum here > “ATM”

Tattooing has given me so much, especially intangible friendships, old and new. Build your friendship on solid ground, and they will last forever.

Solo art show at Max Fish LES NYC on the 21st

February 6th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Events | Painting - (Comments Off)

I’ve spent quite a few nights at this legendary Lower East Side bar/art gallery called Max Fish.  Out of the many places I’ve been to in this city, this is the one I feel the most at home. Thats why When I was asked about doing a show here I jumped at the opportunity. (second solo show ever, maybe last)

Max Fish is a Lower East Side institution, it has been serving cheap drinks back when Ludlow Street was nothing but dry goods stores and drug dealers. Now it’s all overpriced boutiques and frat boys, but Max remains, though the local clientele has been augmented by British tourists and PR girls. The big, high-ceilinged room has a pool table in the back, booths at both ends and a creative, ever-changing paint job pulling it all together.  Many complain about how bright the bar is, but the light level allows you to appreciate each month’s art show and offers a fighting chance against beer goggles.

The NYPD and the owner keep making attempts to shut this historical Lower East Side bar down, for no good reason. For now bar remains open and a landmark of significance to NYC, in particular its Lower East Side.  After over two decades, we hope it stays that way, open.

Im honored to show some of my watercolor paintings at Max Fish, And to have my big brother Stack Aly DJ the event.

Thanks,

Ulli

Opening reception Feb. 21st 9 pm- on (178 Ludlow St, LES, New York City) is open to the public.

New Yorkers first tattoo a koi dragon

February 4th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Reference | Tattoo - (Comments Off)

Did this Koi Dragon tattoo today, I love tattooing these, body of a koi, and the transforming head of a dragon. perfect. still have to add background to make it feel complete, but its a good start. to be continued…

A version of the Koi/Dragon Myth

In the wild, koi are cold water fish who gain strength by swimming against currents. It seems they have captured the imagination of fish fanciers for centuries.   Many years ago, in a time before recorded history, a huge school containing thousands of koi swam up the Yellow River. The colors of their well muscled bodies flashed in the sunlight making them seem like a million living jewels. All was going well until the koi reached a waterfall. Immediately, a large number of them grew discouraged and turned back, finding it much easier to simply go with the flow of the river.   Yet, a determined group of 360 koi stayed on. Straining and leaping, each koi strove to reach the top of the falls. Again and again they flung their bodies into the air only to fall back into the water. All this splashing noise drew the attention of the local demons who laughed at the efforts of the struggling koi. Adding to their misery, the demons sadistically increased the height of the falls. Still the koi refused give up!   Undeterred, the koi continued their efforts for one hundred years. At last, with one heroic leap, a single koi reached the top of the falls. The God’s smiled down in approval and transformed the exhausted koi into a shining golden dragon. He joyfully spends his days chasing pearls of wisdom across the skies of the vast and eternal heavens.
