Rest in Power Sid

July 18th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Clothing | Friends | Photos - (Comments Off)

I will morn my homies till I join my homies.  Sid was one of my best friends, I met him a bit later in life. He was Dave Gibson’s only official apprentice at the original Lucky’s Tattoo Parlor in the late 90′s.  Him and I we’re coming up together in tattooing and planned on working together for the rest of our lives.  Sid was a hard charger in life. everything he did he did to the max, and he never backed down.  His imposing size and style belied his huge heart and warm temperament. Everyone liked him, and, from the first lines he laid down, he was know for strong and consistent work.  That, and his caring ways and exuberant sense of humor made him an invaluable addition to the shop and our lives. Sid was buried in Rosarita Beach, Baja, California.  He is survived by his parents, step-parents, brother and sisters and scores of friends.  Rest in peace my friend, Nos Vemos.

I was with Sid the night before he died, him and I got into a street fight with 5 marines in downtown San Diego after we watched one of them hit a girl. We left the fight on our feet with swollen knuckles and a even tighter friendship. I will forever miss him and his presence in my life. Its been over 10 years now.

Another dear friend “Cookie” pictured in the red shirt with Sid died a couple years later, a untimely death also, and a very dear friend whom also worked at the original Lucky’s Tattoo Parlor with us.  I used to go to my indoor swap meet in Oceanside and make these RIP shirts with iron on old english letters, now I put them on my Lucky’s shop shirts.  Another way for their memory to live on.   The message here is hold on to your loved ones and let them know you love them, you never know when they could go.  Fuck pride, bullshit and ego, love your people.

Is the Magic Gone ? Words by Tim Hendricks

June 29th, 2012 | Posted by admin in Friends | Reference | Tattoo - (Comments Off)

Are the blind leading the blind in tattooing these days? This is a question that has been a major topic of discussion between my peers lately. With tattooing becoming as popular as it is these days every person that knows how to doodle wants to become a tattooer. I can only complain about it so much before I start feeling sad and a bit responsible as a result of partaking in crappy reality TV. When I first watched a tattoo being made it felt like I was in something out of a J.R.R. Tolkien book, it felt totally magical and mysterious, and in some ways it really was. Myke Chambers described it best when he said “This local tattooer was like a wizard to me”. Tattooers would perform the most amazing magic act, and they’d be damned if they would teach you how their trick was done. Now days you can go to a ‘school’ for tattooing and pay money in trade for second-rate so-called knowledge on how to tattoo. It’s a terrible shame, those who know little or nothing about our trade trying to teach the undeserved how to tattoo… for money. (more…)

It has been quite a few years since I have done the Ink & Iron tattoo convention.  The last time I did, it was with my dear friend Nervio, and we had such a good time.   So this year I will be flying in from New York to do Ink & Iron and working with one of my favorite people/tattooers in the world my friend Tim Hendricks.  We will be next to our friends from Goldrush Tattoo in Costa Mesa and other great friends including Dan Smith and Dave Kruseman.  Tim will be selling all his great swag; custom tattoo machines, sketchbooks, tattoo pens and his new T shirt line, which is a must have in any wardrobe

I will be selling some new very limited prints, the classic “California Love Lucky’s Tee” and sketchbooks.  I am 99% booked up but please stop by and say hello.  We will see you there. June 8,9,and 10

Picture above: Hand painted name signs, Tim did for our booth at the show. He’s truly the best.

I was so shocked to hear that Junior Seau has been killed.  As a young kid growing up in Oceanside California we didn’t have too many heroes, and a lot of us looked up to the gangsters and top drug dealers in the area, they had the respect of the street, they had all the nice stuff, the cleanest Impalas the newest Escalades.  But amongst all that nonsense was a great admiration for Junior Seau, that everyone felt, he was the hometown hero, one of the most known and respected guys that made it from our time period and our city. I recently had the honor and pleasure to spend a holiday at his home in Oceanside with him and some of his family, where I was so welcomed and forced to eat so much good food, Junior kept saying “Luke ! eat ” I will cherish that memory and the memory of his life.

One of my best/oldest friends Rob Ruiz is a world class chef out of Oceanside, and would cook for him and his family from time to time, and thats how the connection was made.

I am not a sports fan, but Im a big fan of good people. Junior was a good person and will be missed greatly here on earth, as the earth needs more people like him. Rest in Power big homie, Thanks for all the good. Respect #55
